The long awaited Sex and the City movie is finally out on DVD. Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Kim Cattral and Cynthia Nixon vamp through NYC playing the infamous Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbs. New York City is again given the limelight and Mr. Big returns for more.

The girls are back and as fabulous as ever. Three years after the Sex and the City series ends, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) hits the ground running with three published books and many new lessons learned. Mr. Big (Chris Noth), always an audience favourite, returns as a matured and much more settled partner to Carrie.
A quick intro of the past Sex and the City series is excellently achieved through a faux novel that comes to life with some of the most memorable moments in the HBO series. Remember when Charlotte lamented, “I’ve been dating since I was 15, I'm exhausted. Where is he?”

Although fashion is still the key to this group, Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones (Kim Cattral), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon) have definitely matured over the three years, which is evident in the way they carry themselves and the few extra lines proudly exposed on their faces.
The most developed character is still Carrie Bradshaw, as she continues to narrate her way through the trials and tribulations of living in New York City. The difference now is that all of the women are in couples, but, not to worry, dirty talk and innuendoes are still not shied away from.
The acting has also matured and the film version challenges each of the actresses to stretch their abilities a lot further than they had to in the series. Although almost bordering on melodrama at times, the cast seems to pull out of it before things go over the top.
Jennifer Hudson
A definite treat for the audience is the introduction of Louise (American Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson, also the star of Dreamgirls). Hudson plays the role of Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant perfectly, adding an ultra casual and natural performance to the mix.
Her grounding influence helps the film stay rooted in realism and her relationship with Carrie is both sweet and necessary for the movie to progress. Hudson shows that she can follow up a breakout performance with another fine effort.

Seeing the movie in theatres is exciting, but it’s the video version that reveals all the extras. The Sex and the City movie on DVD comes in an extended cut and includes 12 more minutes of footage.
The scenes that were cut are available through the additional scenes extras, as is a commentary by Director Michael Patrick King, an interview with King and Sarah Jessica Parker, a look into the fashion of the film, and a behind-the-scenes peak into singer Fergie’s (of Black Eyed Peas) involvement in the soundtrack.
