Under the Tuscan Sun is a romantic movie starring Diane Lane that was released in 2003. Diane Lane stars as Frances, in a movie about starting over, making opportunities and finding a new life.
Frances is a San Francisco publisher woman betrayed by her husband, ending the marriage in divorce. She lets him have the house in the divorce settlement and moves out to live in a sleazy rooming house, taking only three boxes of belongings.
Frances Travels to Tuscany
Frances’ friends are concerned about her, so they intervene to give her a trip to Tuscany that they were not able to use. She sets out to Tuscany on a gay and lesbian bus tour. As the bus tours the golden countryside of Tuscany, she sees a villa that piques her imagination and purchases it on impulse with her money from the divorce.
The villa is in shambles, so Frances sets out to make it livable. Frances is a fish out of water, as she adjusts to her new life and comes to what she is doing in Tuscany. She makes friends with some of the villagers and the Polish crew she hired to help with her home repairs. Gradually she adjusts to a different way of life, as the story takes twists and turns, just like the roads that wind around Tuscany.
The characters that wind in and out of her life include a married lawyer, an older but childlike actress (Lindsay Duncan , a Polish working crew, a handsome Italian dream man named Marcello (Raoul Bova) young lovers, her pregnant lesbian friend (Sandra Oh) and villagers.
Under the Tuscan Sun is a movie filled with warm golden and umber tones, set to Italian music. Scenes of leisurely dinners and red wine are inviting enough to make the viewer want to run out and purchase airplane tickets to Tuscany.
Just as the lead character finds a new life, the viewer might be inspired to explore what else life might hold for them.
